Abstract
This article explores the popularization of municipal rituals of mayoral communication on social media. It investigates the strategies employed by actors in this process and the role played by the media capabilities of these platforms. Specifically, the study examines how the popularization of these rituals on social media influences continuity and change in social knowledge relations. It focuses on three main aspects: (1) new practices of interactive, sociotechnical ascertainment, measurement, enactment, and communication of popularity, (2) the utilization and transformation of embedded knowledge resources, and (3) conflicts surrounding the desirability or undesirability of popularity, particularly in the realm of local politics. On a theoretical level, this working paper aims to apply the concept of common ground from the perspective of interactional and psycholinguistic theories to shed light on the these questions, using mayoral communication as an illustrative example.
