Abstract
The question of how election results were published in German newspapers at the beginning of the 20th century and how these representations changed until around 1950 has not been given any attention so far. In order to gain an initial impression, various newspaper archives were used to systematically examine in regional daily newspapers how and according to what criteria the results of political elections were made accessible to the public. Newspapers from different parts of Germany were examined with regard to the published lists, tables, texts and graphic representations. It was found that a hierarchical listing according to the number of votes won, as is common today, was only seen in the majority of cases after the end of the Second World War. Before that, the lists were organized according to other criteria, such as the order of the parties on the ballot papers.
