Abstract
This paper analyses the interaction within the so-called of Sport-Economy-Media.
At the beginning of the new millenium the professional sport is being shaken by numerous scandals, mysterious deaths of athletes, and crises up to the maximum credible accident of the Tour de France in 1998. But still, modern sport, that can meanwhile be regarded as media sport, mega show and even cultural assets, is ubiquitous.
What is the present status quo of the Olympic Spirit of the ? Which sport reality do the media present us using what kind of mechanisms? How big is the influence of the industrialist sponsors and the media tycoons? Where in this multi-billion moloch are the althletes and the honest perfomance? In the year of the Olympic Games 2000 athletes who have been tested
positively for drug abuse can no longer necessarily expect to be reprieved. The different examples of Merlene Ottey and Dieter Baumann demonstrate this fact impressively.
This paper analyses how the media direct sport with its sensations and scandals and the resulting consequences. It is also an adventurous journey through classic and curious events of media sport:
From the Wembley-Final in 1966 and the disgraceful elimination of the German national football team in 2000 to Formula 1 racing, from the Dieter Baumann affaire to the Tour de France.
