Abstract
In the early 1990s, a surge in popular interest in music from Africa brought this topic into music didactics. Since then, music from Africa has become one of the fundamental parts of music didactic literature. However, numerous historical sources show earlier interest in integrating African cultures and its music into education.
The study Africa in music didactics offers a detailed analysis of the interface between music didactics and ethnomusicology from different perspectives: A 100-year long historiographical retrospective, a broad textbook analysis, and a survey of three protagonists. The core question at the heart of this study: What are the objectives of addressing music from Africa in music didactics?
