Ultra-wideband based communications and localization in wireless sensor networks
The key motivations for using ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems are their capability for providing high capacity wireless communications, as well as the availability of technology to implement and generate UWB signals with relatively low complexity. Non-coherent receivers with no channel estimation have been proposed to make the UWB technology attractive for applications where low cost and low power consumption are playing an important role, as in the case of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Transmitted Reference (TR) signaling, in combination with an autocorrelation receiver (AcR) is especially suitable in this context. The large bandwidth of UWB technology does not only provide the possibility to transmit at a very high data rate, but also provides very accurate temporal and spatial information that can be used for precise timing offset estimation. UWB Impulse Radio (IR) uses sub-nanosecond pulses which provide a high resolution capability in the time domain, making it attractive for accurate wireless localization. Indeed, its ability to resolve multipath components makes it possible to obtain accurate location estimates without the need for complex estimation algorithms. This facilitates many applications such as location-aware sensor networking. This thesis presents several contributions towards developing UWB technology for short-range low to medium data rate WSN applications. First, different low complexity TR-UWB receivers are thoroughly analyzed, using the Gaussian approximation on the noise terms in the receiver statistics, and then using the equivalent system and noise models of these receivers. Both approaches lead to the bit error performance analysis, which is also presented in this thesis. The TR-UWB systems were modelled as polynomial nonlinear systems. Since the statistics of the radio channel are used in the system modelling as well as in the performance analysis, appropriate channel models for UWB impulse radio systems are discussed in this thesis. Further, synchronization issues are addressed. To this end, a novel data-aided timing acquisition technique for frame-level synchronization of DTR-UWB systems is suggested. It is based on incorporating parallel integration-and-dump circuits within pulse-pair correlator branches to improve considerably the energy capture in the presence of timing offset. Moreover, a simple algorithm for fine synchronization of low complexity TR-UWB systems, assuming no inter-symbol interference, is proposed. It uses energy collected at the symbol rate, thus reducing considerably the implementation complexity. If the hardware clock timing error is known, timing offset estimation problems are analogical to ranging problems, and the proposed algorithm can readily be used as a new distance measurement technique. It is shown, in this thesis, that the proposed ranging approach allows localization accuracy in the centimeter range using TR-UWB systems with data rates up to 5 Mb/s.

Second moment modelling for the numerical simulation of passive scalar dispersion of air pollutants in urban environments
Since the Industrial Revolution mankind has needed to deal with increasing air pollution problems as a result of manufacturing, mining, transportation, and power production. Air pollution concerns the interaction of gases and particles emitted into the atmosphere with the surrounding environment. This interaction can redirect pollutants toward sensitive areas, concentrate different species above acceptable levels, or even mitigate concentration levels by enhancing diffusion and dispersion. The present EU environmental legislation has been implemented to control these high pollutant concentrations and improve the air quality conditions in urban areas. The numerical simulation of dispersion has shown to be a useful tool for both the scientific description of pollution phenomena and for planning and decision making. The numerical simulation of pollution dispersion in urban environments by means of solution of the statistically steady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations is known to be strongly dependent on turbulence models. If pollution dispersion is modelled, the turbulence models do not only have to be used for the Reynolds stresses, but also for the turbulent scalar fluxes. While the influence of several turbulence models for Reynolds stresses on pollution dispersion in urban environments has already been examined several times, the turbulent scalar fluxes are usually modelled by the simple gradient diffusion assumption. In the present work, the influence of more advanced models for the turbulent scalar fluxes on the dispersion of pollutants is examined. Two different wind tunnel experiments, a two-dimensional (2D) street canyon and a three-dimensional (3D) urban area model, were selected for the validation of the models' performance. In total, five anisotropic algebraic flux models and two second moment models were implemented in the commercial software FLUENT 6.3. All these models together with the simple gradient diffusion model (with different turbulent Schmidt numbers) are used and the results are compared with measurements using statistical performance measures to assess their predictive capability. All evaluated models showed good general agreement in comparison to the experiments. The anisotropic models provided better concentration predictions than the isotropic models in 2D simulations. However, these improvements were very small in 3D simulations and usually disappeared. In the end, modelling improvements based on the sensitivity analysis of model coefficients, numerical and experimental model limitations and other parameters and assumptions relevant for the simulation of passive scalar pollution dispersion are presented and discussed.

With the increase of required lifetime of power transformers, diagnostics become more and more important to monitor the condition of the insulation system. There are numerous methods existing for the analysis of different components or parts of the insulation and their electrical and chemical properties. The results of all these methods together should give a complete overview of the condition of the sample. This thesis presents new approaches in measurement data evaluation for two diagnostic methods, the Return Voltage Measurement (RVM) - also known as Recovery Voltage Measurement - and the Partial Discharge (PD) Measurement in the insulating oil. The Return Voltage Measurement is an integral method that is influenced by both the solid and the liquid component of the insulation. In contrast to this, the PD Measurement in transformer oil basically reveals information about the condition of the liquid component. Especially the Return Voltage Measurement is often criticized as not being suitable for transformer diagnostics due to a lack of useful evaluation methods. Most methods that have been known for many years - i.e. especially the Polarisation Spectrum as the most well-known one - do not take the physically relevant processes inside a multi-layer insulation into account and thus give insufficient or even wrong interpretation of the data. The basic mechanism in oil-cellulose insulation systems is the boundary polarization which is the only polarization mechanism - maybe only except charge carrier trapping or space charge processes - that can produce time constants in the range of up to several hundreds of seconds. For the description of boundary polarization processes in a two-component system, the Maxwell equivalent circuit can be used. For this equivalent circuit it is possible to calculate all relevant parameters analytically, even with an additional resistance - e.g. the finite input resistance of the measuring equipment - and capacitance in parallel. The goal of this work is to show that an evaluation of RVM data according to the Maxwell equivalent circuit may reveal additional information about the condition of the insulation - especially that of the cellulose component - that cannot be gained by interpretation based on the commonly used formal equivalent circuit. For the analysis of the condition of the liquid component of the insulation - i.e. in this case the transformer oil - different methods exist that in many cases are relatively intricate and expensive. The simpler methods like e.g. the electric breakdown strength testing often do not reveal much information about the actual overall condition of the oil. The present work compares the partial discharge behavior of transformer oils in different conditions and with different histories of ageing in order to find correlations to the presence of certain degradation products that do not necessarily directly affect the electrical strength of the oil - and that consequently cannot be detected by simple dielectric strength measurements, e.g. a breakdown test - but that may reveal information about the overall condition of the insulation system. Usually those substances can only be detected e.g. by gas chromatography or similar procedures. The basic idea behind the experiments was to find at least a qualitative influence of these substances on partial discharge parameters. In some cases the results could be compared to the results of standard analyses like the Dissolved Gas Analysis. The influence of the concentration of water in the oil was evaluated as well. The partial discharge measurements were performed using a low frequency wide-band band pass filter system as detector. For the evaluation of the partial discharge data, recently developed methods were applied that mainly analyze the shape of the signals generated by the partial discharge detector (Pulse Shape Analysis). The shape of these impulse responses is influenced by short-time sequences of partial discharge events in the range of a few microseconds. The final goal of the experiments was to find methods that allow a quick (maybe even on-line) low-cost analysis that allows a relatively prompt reaction to critical states of the insulation system. The low cost aspect is particularly interesting for smaller and/or less important equipment, where other on-line monitoring methods would be too costly and consequently are usually not applied. The intention is not to replace the standard methods like e.g. the DGA, but rather as a complementary pre-analysis that - in case of the detection of a critical condition - may lead to a warning and subsequently to a further analysis using standard methods.

Watershed hydrological responses to changes in land use and land cover, and management practices at Hare watershed, Ethiopia
This study investigates hydrological responses to changes in land use, land cover and management practices at Hare River watershed, Southern Rift Valley Lakes Basin, Ethiopia. It addresses methods that are required to better characterize impacts of land use and cover and climate change scenarios and understand the upstream-downstream linkages with respect to irrigation water allocation. Understanding how the changes in land use and cover influence streamflow and subsequently optimization of available water resources utilization can enhance the ability of planners, practitioners, researchers and farmers to formulate and implement sound policies to minimize undesirable future impacts and devise management alternatives. Three land use and cover maps were developed using aerial photographs and satellite image through visual interpretation of the aerial photographs and supervised classification of the satellite image. The rates of land use and land cover changes were identified for two periods at watershed and sub-watershed levels. Two physical-based, semi-distributed hydrological models, SWAT2005/ArcSWAT and HSPF, were utilized to simulate hydrological responses to land use and climatic changes. Streamflow data at the outlet of the watershed was utilized to analyze seasonal stream flow variability due to land use and land cover changes. The performances of the models have been evaluated through sensitivity analysis, calibration, validation and uncertainty analysis. Consequently, impacts of hypothetical land use and climate change scenarios were developed to analyze their impacts on downstream water users. Eventually, based on the results these scenario analyses a new optimal irrigation water allocation tool was developed to allocate available water resources among competing irrigation sites. The results of the land use and land cover change analysis identified that farmlands and settlements class has expanded during the past four decades. Detailed impacts of these changes were analyzed employing the SWAT2005. Sensitivity analysis using the SWAT2005 model has pointed out some crucial parameters that control the surface and subsurface hydrological processes of the studied watershed. Consequently, results of the models performances assessment illustrated that both SWAT2005 and HSPF have resulted acceptable outputs with some efforts of acquiring data in areas where there is limited available data. However, the SWAT2005 model performs slightly better than HSPF for monthly and seasonal streamflow analysis. As a result, streamflow variability during the dry and wet seasons was further analysed using this model based on pre-identified scenarios. Furthermore, uncertainty analyses were performed and discussed using ParaSol, SUNGLASSES, SUFI-2 and GLUE methods. On the other hand, results from the climate change scenario analysis using GCM for the period of 2010-2099 showed that an increase in future average annual precipitation and average temperature when compared to the baseline period. Similarly, analysis made on intervention of small scale irrigation in the upper and middle reach of the watershed resulted in substantial decrease in mean monthly discharge during the dry season, while increased discharge during the wet season. Consequently, an optimal tool was developed to allocate scarce water resources among three upstream and downstream demand sites with a prime objective of achieving equitable resources utilization while maintaining acceptable economic efficiency and environmental sustainability. The analysis revealed that a substantial volume of water can be saved through deficit irrigation principles. It is also noted that, in the face of intense competition among irrigation water users where there is a significant water shortage throughout a watershed, equitable and efficient utilization of water resources has always remained a social goal. The developed tool can be used in other watersheds too by decision makers and planners where there exist irrigation water allocation problems between competing upstream and downstream irrigation sites. However, it needs simulation outputs from SWAT2005 and needs to specify the exact sub-watersheds where the irrigation sites are located. In order to utilize outputs from other models, the tool needs some modification in the algorithm (visual basic) specifically on the declaration of the input files. Generally, the results highlighted that use of an integrated simulation-optimization approach has a paramount importance to investigate impacts of land use and cover and climate change on hydrological regime and consequently allocate limited available water resource in an equitable manner among competing sites.

Modulare Simulation komplexer SAR-Szenarien: Signalgenerierung, Positionsschätzung und Missionsplanung
    (2009)

Energy consistent time-integration of hybrid multibody systems
    (2009)
In the present contribution we address the design of energy-consistent time stepping schemes for hybrid multibody systems, which consist of rigid and flexible parts. First focusing on rigid body dynamics, we will present a specific rotationless formulation to describe rigid body rotations. This kinematics alleviates the design of energy-consistent integration schemes which facilitate a stable numerical integration of the corresponding set of differential algebraic equations. Furthermore we will mainly focus on vital modeling features concerning rigid bodies. In this connection we present the coordinate augmentation technique, the design of explicit null space matrices for closed loop systems, the incorporation of control constraints, the modeling of dissipation and its consistent time integration, the incorporation of kinematic constraints as well as the coupling of flexible and rigid structures. The performance of the final hybrid scheme will be demonstrated with an example incorporating all modeling features listed above.

    Zylinderdruckbasierte Füllungserfassung für Verbrennungsmotoren
    (2009)

    (2008)
The interaction of spherical bodies with the flow surrounding them plays a very important role in ball aerodynamics. In soccer shots on goal and free kicks are often performed without or with little spin in order to generate a swerve from the expected trajectory, the so-called knuckling effect. A second strategy involves applying spin to the ball around an axis perpendicular to the flight direction, which generates a curved trajectory due to the Magnus force. In the present study a basic understanding of the flow phenomena observed is established. Furthermore it is pointed out where more research on sphere and ball aerodynamics is needed. Additionally it is made clear, that experimental results often vary to a great extent even if the boundary conditions are the same due to the experimental set-up. Thus, the conceptual design of the wind tunnel set-ups of the present work was to reduce the flow interference of the supporting device with the sphere or soccer ball. Investigations in the non-rotating state show that for soccer balls the critical Reynolds number range is shifted to considerably lower Reynolds numbers than for a smooth sphere. Simultaneously very high lateral forces are observed in this critical Reynolds number range. For a smooth sphere in the supercritical Reynolds number range, lateral forces are non-zero when averaged over an appropriate time interval. The reason is that the wake is inclined with respect to the flow axis. In the supercritical Reynolds number regime of a soccer ball the magnitude and direction of the lateral forces depend on the ball orientation relative to the approaching flow. The investigations in the rotating state show the following: The results obtained on a sphere driven by a shaft passed through the sphere center are influenced to a great extent by the flow interaction with the supporting device. When a rear mounted supporting device is used, the results are less affected. Aerosol visualizations and wind tunnel balance measurements show that for a rotating sphere mainly reverse Magnus effect occurs when the Reynolds number is in a range of 125.000 to 450.000 and the spin parameter is based on rotational frequencies lower than 10 [Hz]. Considerable lateral forces and lateral force fluctuations occurring simultaneously prove that the Magnus effect for a sphere in the critical Reynolds number range is three-dimensional. For a model of a soccer ball a general shift of the Reynolds number range to lower Reynolds numbers is observed. Reverse Magnus effect occurs in a Reynolds number range of 96.000 to 248.000 whereas lateral forces are low. Soccer ball trajectory simulations without spin show that lateral forces do not significantly change the flight time, but cause a scattering of the coordinates in the goal plane. The reverse Magnus effect obtained on smooth spheres leads to lateral deviations from a straight trajectory opposite to those observed for soccer balls.
