Publication Access status: Metadata only , Bis‐ and Tris‐norbornadienes with High Energy Densities for Efficient Molecular Solar Thermal Energy StorageMolecular solar thermal energy storage (MOST) systems can convert, store and release solar energy in chemical bonds, i.e., as chemical energy. In this work, phenyl‐ and naphthyl‐linked bis‐ and tris‐norbornadienes are presented as promising MOST systems with very high energy densities. The substrates were synthesized by Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions and their absorption properties and characteristic parameters for MOST applications were investigated. The norbornadiene derivatives showed absorption onsets of up to 386 nm and photoisomerization quantum yields of 56 % per photoisomerization event. The resulting quadricyclane products have half‐lifes up to 14 d and very high energy densities of up to 734 kJ/kg. Overall, these norbornadienes fulfill necessary criteria for an optimal MOST system and are, therefore, a highly promising basis for the development of materials for efficient solar energy conversion and storage.Source Type:Article3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Access status: Metadata only , Effect of diameter on the stability of granulated Ca(OH)2 during thermochemical cycling in a fixed bed reactorOne solution to reduce CO2 emissions and advance climate protection in the heat sector is the utilization of thermochemical energy storages (TCES) based on the material Ca(OH)2 to store waste heat or surplus electricity. In contrast to powdered materials, the material in granular form has a lower tendency to be affected by agglomeration effects and provides higher energy density and thermal conductivity. This results in enhanced durability, stability, and efficiency of the storage, making the storage material Ca(OH)2 in granular form more suitable for TCES applications. This work investigates the performance of a chemically unmodified granular sample over 15 storage cycles in a test fixed bed reactor and evaluates whether its performance and durability are already sufficient for potential applications without further modification. In addition, different granule samples with different diameters were also cycled to determine whether the selection of certain diameter sizes can improve the stability of the granules. Furthermore, different methods were used in the pre- and post-analyses to assess the stability of the samples. The comparison of three tested granular samples with different diameters reveals that the sample with a diameter of 2–4 mm has the highest durability and reactor performance. Despite a decrease in mechanical strength, this configuration could be suitable for applications with a small number of storage cycles, such as seasonal storages.Source Type:Article2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Access status: Metadata only , Monoaryl‐Substituted Norbornadiene Photoswitches as Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Compounds: Synthesis and InvestigationIn the search for improved photochromic systems that may be used for the efficient reversible conversion of light into chemical energy, eight monoaryl‐substituted norbornadienes are presented, which carry naphthyl, anthracenyl, or donor‐acceptor‐phenyl substituents to establish an extended π system. The substrates were synthesized by Suzuki‐Miyaura coupling reactions, and their absorption properties, the key parameters of the photochromic equilibrium, and the energy storage density of the quadricyclane products were examined. It was observed that these compounds have favorable properties for chemical energy storage. Specifically, 2‐(1‐naphthyl)norbornadiene showed a pronounced red shift of the absorption, a long half‐life (35 d) and a relatively high energy storage density (361 KJ/Kg) of the respective quadricyclane. Therefore, the so far neglected monoaryl‐norbornadienes represent a useful and complementary class of compounds that should be considered in the development of efficient molecular solar thermal energy storage (MOST) compounds, which can reversibly convert sunlight into chemical energy.Source Type:Article2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Access status: Metadata only , Optimization of the Coating Process of a Ca(OH)2‐Based Thermochemical Energy Storage MaterialA promising candidate for a thermochemical storage system implemented into district heating is a previously developed core‐shell material based on CaO/Ca(OH) 2 . Proceeding from the preliminary manufacturing process, this work aims to optimize relevant material properties as mechanical stability and shell uniformity, by varying defined parameters during a reproduceable coating procedure, ready for commercial upscaling.Source Type:Article
