Publication Access status: Open Access , Boridische Oberflächen für die UmformungThis study investigates boride surface modifications for forming tools and their applicability from hot forging to bending processes. Gas boriding produces extremely hard boride layers (> 2,000 HV) on tools and high-temperature materials at temperatures above 750 °C. Industrial trials demonstrate significantly reduced wear, doubled tool life, and low coefficients of friction and adhesion against aluminum, copper, and titanium alloys; however, they require adapted process control and post-treatment. Quinary Ti-Si-B-C-N coatings, deposited via PECVD and frequently used as a duplex system with plasma nitriding, achieve superhardness up to 40 GPa, high oxidation resistance, and excellent anti-adhesion even on complex geometries. For bending tools, the combination of both approaches enables application-specific optimization between maximum wear protection, local load-bearing capacity, and economic constraints.Source Type:InProceedings3 9
