Abstract
Several reactions on the quasi-binary lines K 2 O - HgO and K 2 O - "Hg 2 O" of the system potassium/mercury/oxygen were carried out at different temperatures. The thermodynamically controlled reactions led always to the only known ternary compound K 2 HgO 2 . The results of lower temperature reactions were intermediate products, depending on the used educts, the reaction time and the temperature gradient. Moreover the crystal structure measurements of the trialkalipnictide K 3 Bi, at room and higher temperature, confirmed the crystal structure in the new structure model P6 3 cm . Cs 3 As, which is isotypicle to K 3 Bi, was also synthesized and characterized by single crystal structure determination. The band structure calculation show a very small band - gap for these highly air sensitive compounds. For K 3 Bi, Cs 3 As and Na 3 Bi a cubic high temperature modification could be proven. Based on the trialkalipnictids (A 3 B-compounds) the exchange of two alkali metals by an alkaline-earth metal led to the group of AEB-coumpounds. Single crystals of KCaBi and NaBaBi were synthesized and characterized. By combination of known compositions and experimental results a model for structure forecasts was developed.
