Abstract
Congenital heart defects (CHF) are among the most common congenital malformations in children. Particularly in the case of severe heart defects, there may be a need for decades-long, sometimes lifelong social support, which primarily affects relatives. One of the possible resources for families, the self-help group, is only used by 12% of those affected. The subject of this research is to examine and interpret the type and extent of use of self-help potentials using the example of families of children with congenital heart defects. The core of the work is a written survey (n=827) of parents of children with congenital heart defects, some of whom (102 people) are members of a self-help group. The results are that the conditions for joining a self-help group are multifactorial and that the interest in participation depends heavily on the severity of the congenital heart defect and additional impairments.
