Abstract
Though a significant amount of classroom research has been done in Germany, and even more in the Anglo-American world, the content of instruction was not being questioned as thoroughly as e. g. methodology or classroom management. What is the "content of instruction?" The author breaks this large question down into the following more simple questions: What opportunities for pedagogical action become accessible for teachers when they perceive "instruction content" as more than just something prescribed in the syllabus which is to be transferred to the heads of the students? What can a particular content signify to the students who deal with it in their lessons and classes? He argues that classroom work aims at the construction of valid pictures ff the world the students live in and have to live in in their future lives.
