Abstract
In Europe presently, the building material bitumen is stored and transported in hot-liquid
form. To reduce dependence and (among others) costs for storage and transportation, engineers
think about a parallel handling of the asphalt-binder in firm form. Experiences for
cold bitumen handling are already present from foreign construction projects. The different
current packing-versions, metal, plastic, wood and cardboard were confronted in this publication.
Regarding an application on the European market they were developed gradually. In
co-operation with project partners of the packaging industry a new Inliner and large volume
silicone cardboard bundles (STRAB O X) were developed.
The technologies and thermo-physical procedures for the reheating of the bonding agent
were examined likewise. Both, conventional liquefaction methods and modern methods of
high-frequency engineering were simulated numerically. The models were compared with
test series and validated by their relief. It was possible to attain practice relevant aids for the
operation of the plant and expertise for its planning.
During these and other attempts to further sections of the Bitumen-Logistics-Chain a constant
monitoring of the characteristics of the building material took place for quality preservation.
Likewise the variants of the procedure were discussed sequentially under commercial
criteria.
The academic advance into this young field of research led (apart from the protection of
several utility models) to the realization, that the cold bitumen handling, even on the highly
developed European market, represents a serious alternative to usual procedures.
