General

Few authors can be identified by a single, definitive name, as names can change and are subject to cultural developments. To identify all of an author's publications, their names are often researched at considerable expense. This problem can be remedied by using a unique personal identifier, such as the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID). ORCID is an identifier for the unique identification of scientific authors. In addition to various types of publications, researchers can store their different name variations, as well as information about their professional career, websites, funding, and awards in their ORCID profile.

Advantages

ORCID is already used by several academic publishers, institutions and professional societies for scientific publications and offers scientists the following advantages:

unambiguous assignment to all publications (including research data) of an author,
automatic generation of a publication overview through synchronization with various international databases (e.g. Web of Science, Scopus),
linking of publications with the same ORCID by publishers – this leads to increased visibility of the publications,
simple and complete representation of research achievements for interim and final reports to research funders using automated export options,
possibility of conveniently displaying one's personal CV and research projects,
enables international visibility and thus the possibility of new collaborations.

Registration with ORCID is free: orcid.org/register. Researchers can easily register via the web portal https://orcid.org and manage their data there – their data sovereignty is always guaranteed. Searching for researchers is also freely available.

ORICD and OPUS

Authors with an ORCID profile can link their publications (e.g., in OPUS Siegen) to their profile. To do this, the author must first grant permission within their ORCID profile. The publication submitted to OPUS can then be linked to the author's ORCID profile. Authors can also link their profile to their ORCID profile after logging into OPUS or register with ORCID.

It is also possible to log in to OPUS using your own ORCID. For further questions about ORCID and ORCID links, please contact the Publication Support Team by email tpu@ub.uni-siegen.de or by phone at 0271-740-4294.
