Der Sozialdienst in der medizinischen Rehabilitation. Eine empirische Untersuchung zur Dokumentation in der Praxis
    (2025-03-22)
On behalf of the German Pension Insurance, almost 900,000 medical rehabilitation services for adults are carried out each year. Social work is an integral part of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team in these institutions. One of the core tasks of social work services is case-related counselling of rehabilitation clients. The documentation of these counselling processes has so far received little attention within social work research. This is surprising, as documentation can influence the coordination of counselling and treatment processes, the perception of social work within the rehabilitation team, as well as the legitimisation of work processes. This dissertation therefore addresses the research question of how, and under which conditions, social work services in medical somatic rehabilitation across Germany design client-related documentation. To answer this question, a quantitative cross-sectional analysis is conducted using a questionnaire survey. The focus of the survey lies on the social work services of rehabilitation institutions funded by the German Pension Insurance. The survey is carried out anonymously using a fully standardised online questionnaire. Subsequently, the data are analysed primarily using descriptive statistical methods. The findings are, among other aspects, related to the historical development of client-related documentation in this field of practice, as well as to the mandates of Social Work. In summary, it can be stated that, in particular, the dominance of medicine, limited developmental dynamics within social work in health care, and a gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applicability influence documentation practice. At the same time, respondents expressed a need for orientation and guidance regarding documentation. With regard to the application of social diagnostics in case-related counselling and the participation of rehabilitation clients in documentation, existing potential has so far not been fully utilised. Overall, the findings highlight that a stronger professionalisation of social work and a systematic further development of documentation practices are necessary in order to secure the visibility and relevance of Social Work within interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams in medical rehabilitation in the long term.
