Abstract
Based on theoretical and econometric analyzes with a data panel of 86 countries (between 1972 and 2014), this thesis examines the relationship between fiscal decentralization and internal conflicts. The analysis employs theoretical models as well as cross-sectional and panel-econometric methods to shed light on this relationship. The empirical results indicate a significant negative relationship between fiscal decentralization and the incidence of civil war. Moreover, the empirical results also show that fiscal decentralization can increase the conflict impact of natural resources. Consequently, the results suggest that a well-designed decentralization of revenues from natural resources can contribute to enhance the conflict-reducing effect of decentralization, thereby preventing violent internal con-flicts. Such measures can help to build sustainable peace and the economic develop-ment, especially in developing countries.
