Abstract
The Rammekens fortress was built since 1547 in the Dutch province of Zeeland near the town of Vlissingen. The client was Emperor Charles V, the architect was Donato di Pellizuoli from Bergamo. The purpose of the fortification was to secure the entrance to the port of Antwerp. Rammekens is one of the oldest bastion fortresses outside of Italy. The Gate of the building belongs to the earliest examples of the import of the Italian Renaissance in the Netherlands.
