Publication Access status: Open Access , In the spirit of addition: taking a 'Practice+' approach to studying mediaThis collection of articles considers the possibility of taking an “additive” approach to studying media, which the con- tributors to the collection refer to as a “practice+” approach. In this spirit the collection attempts to establish novel connections that potentially bring new life to the study of practice, by explo- ring new concepts, thinkers, energies, methodologies, and disci- plinary traditions. These additional engagements, it is argued, are intended to augment and supplement (rather than displace or replace) popular practice approaches offered through, and found within, ethnomethodology, organizational studies, workplace studies and similar. The articles explore how practices are vari- ously constituted in, and through, contemporary media such as video platforms, collaborative text editors, enterprise software, social media APIs, automotive navigation systems, and health data apps. In these cases not only does one find a welter of va- ried, interconnected, multi-scalar, differentially located practices but in the process of their articulation, one also discovers new vocabularies with which to document and articulate them. Publication Access status: Metadata only , Neue Rechte und UniversitätIn dieser Ausgabe der "Navigationen" sammeln wir Ressourcen gegen die Vereinnahmung der Universität durch die so genannte Neue Rechte. Auslöser für das Themenheft sind die Geschehnisse rund um ein Seminar, das im Wintersemester 2018/19 unter dem Titel „Denken und Denken lassen. Zur Philosophie und Praxis der Meinungsfreiheit“ an der Universität Siegen angeboten wurde. Das Seminar wurde von einer Vorlesungsreihe flankiert, in der „dezidiert konservative oder rechte Denker“ eine Bühne bekamen, u.a. Marc Jongen von der AfD, und der Autor Thilo Sarrazin. Ein zentrales Anliegen dieser Ausgabe ist es, die Siegener Ereignisse zu dokumentieren, wissenschaftlich aufzuarbeiten und in verschiedenen Hinsichten zu kontextualisieren: diskursstrategisch, geographisch, historisch und politisch. Hierzu versammelt das Heft Beiträge diverser Forschungsdisziplinen – explizit auch von Vertreter*innen derjenigen Disziplinen, deren Existenzrecht von Teilen der Siegener Vortragenden in Zweifel gezogen wird. Publication Access status: Open Access , The technicity of platform governance: structure and evolution of Facebook’s APIsResearchers, policymakers, and competition and regulation authorities worldwide recognise application pro- gramming interfaces (APIs) for powering the digital economy and driving processes of datafication and platformisation. However, it is unclear how APIs tie into the power of, and gov- ernance by, large digital platforms. This article traces the rela- tionality between Facebook’s APIs, platform governance, and data strategy based on an empirical and evolutionary analy- sis. It examines a large corpus of (archived) developer pages and API reference documentation to determine the technicity of platform governance – the technical dimension and dynam- ics of how and what platforms like Facebook seek to govern. It traces how Facebook Platform evolved into a complex layered and interconnected governance arrangement, wherein techni- cal API specifications serve to enforce (changes to) platform policy and (data) strategy. Finally, the article discusses the significance of this technicity in specifying the material condi- tions for app and business development ‘on top of’ platforms and for maintaining infrastructural and evolutive power over their ecosystems.Source Type:BookSeries:Working paper series / SFB 1187 Medien der KooperationVolume number:203 51
